What it is

Retrograde Mercury is an optical effect: from Earth it looks like Mercury is moving backward against the background of the zodiac. In astrology, Mercury is linked with thinking, communication, documents, and short trips, so its retrograde phase is seen as a time when these areas work differently. Instead of a smooth, linear flow, information may loop back, repeat, or require edits and clarifications. Messages get delayed, plans are adjusted, old contacts or ideas resurface. It is less about disaster and more about review, correction, and catching what was missed before.

The shadow period

The shadow period is the zone before and after retrograde when Mercury passes through the degrees it will later revisit. Astrologers see the pre-shadow as setting up themes and questions that will be revised, and the post-shadow as the time to integrate lessons and finalize decisions. In practice, it just means the story around your plans may start a bit earlier and finish a bit later than the exact retrograde dates.

What goes well

What to postpone

What gets exaggerated

Stories that retrograde Mercury automatically ruins relationships, breaks all electronics, or guarantees failed deals are heavily exaggerated. It does not force problems; it tends to highlight where there was already haste, missing information, or weak agreements. With a bit of extra attention and flexibility, most people move through this period just fine.

How the dates are calculated

These dates come from the positions of the planets, not copied from other sites. A station is the moment a planet’s apparent motion changes direction. The shadow starts when the planet first reaches the degree of its future direct station and ends when it gets back to the degree where it stationed retrograde. Dates are given in US Eastern time.
